Victorian Folding Parasol Unusual Curled Handle
The plaited black silk cover is shattered, but the black silk lining is much more intact.
Metal spokes are all in good and working condition, there is only one tip missing, as shown.
The handle is ornately carved wood with an unusual scroll at the end.
The brass folding mechanism is very strong and works well.
The top does not tilt.
The silk top opens to 22-1/2” across and the overall length is 26-1/2”. The folded length is 14-3/4”.
I was part of an historical group in which we studied many extant examples of Victorian dress to find that these black parasols were not meant for mourning. It was just that black was a popular color for them, yet anyone in mourning would not have turned them down for that reason :)
